Our Library Van

Our Library Van.jpg

Whether you’re in a busy township or a quieter residential area, Our Library Van (OLiV) will be within easy reach, offering something for everyone.

You can browse, borrow, and return library items, as well as request and pick up holds at any one of our 16 stops across the Peninsula.

While the van stays outside, all library services are delivered indoors at local venues like Community Centres and Town Halls, so you access library resources and services in comfort, no matter the weather.

Make borrowing even easier by selecting Library Van (MPLS) as your pick-up location when placing holds online. Your items will be available at any of our OLiV stops for the following 14 days once items are ready for collection.

Not sure where to find us? Just follow the flags and directional signs outside each venue. They’ll guide you inside to our friendly OLiV Team and a great range of books and resources including:

  •  Fiction
  •  Non-Fiction
  •  Large Print Books
  •  Talking Books
  •  Children’s Stories

We’re also partnering with Your Local Connection Points to bring customer support and library services together in one place. This means fewer trips, less travel and easier access to the services our community uses the most.

Please note: OLiV does not operate on public holidays or during extreme climate events such as days of total fire ban, flooding, or heatwaves to keep both our staff and the community safe.

The current OLiV timetable will conclude on Friday 19 December 2025 for the summer break, with services resuming in February 2026. The new year will bring a refreshed service, featuring a revised timetable (based on community usage and feedback) and free programs for all age groups. Keep an eye on our social media and website for more information.

Meet OLiV (Our Library Van)

Meet the newest addition to Our Mornington Peninsula Shire Library - a Mercedes Sprinter van called OLiV (Our Library Van).

OLiV's main mission is to bring books, Wi-Fi, and other library materials directly to your town – so you can enjoy library services without having to travel too far from home.

OLiV will be visiting 16 stops across 14 unique locations on the Mornington Peninsula over a fortnightly schedule.

We will also be partnering with Your Local Connection Points. This way, Our Mornington Peninsula Shire Library can reach a greater part of our community and offer easier, more convenient access to both Shire customer service providers and library services and resources.

With OLiV, you can browse our collection, place holds, pick up, borrow, and return your library items from any of our 14 designated sites.

You can become a member, use our free Wi-Fi, or browse the latest digital news on our shared community iPad.

We can't wait for you to experience the convenience and accessibility of OLiV - Our Library Van.

Where does OLiV stop?

OLiV visits 16 stops across 14 unique locations on the Mornington Peninsula over a fortnightly timetable.

A comprehensive analysis of a range of information has informed the timetable including:

  • Data from the previous mobile library service

    • Vulnerable children
    • Education – areas of high risk of disengagement.
    • Mental health
    • Family violence.

These stops include: Balnarring, Blairgowrie, Capel Sound, Dromana, Flinders, Hastings, Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha, Red Hill, Rye, Somers, Sorrento and Tootgarook.

What services does OLiV provide?

OLiV offers a range of books including the latest fiction and non-fiction, talking books, large print, and children’s stories.

In addition, library members can request library items from our catalogue and collect these items from the most convenient library van stop to their homes or workplaces.

Just select ‘Library Van MPLS’ as your pick-up location and your items will be available from any OLiV stop for a period of 14 days.

Please note: Inter-Library Loan items, newspapers and magazines will not be available; however, our community can use the shared iPad to read digital newspapers and magazines onsite. Our friendly staff will be able to assist you in accessing these digital resources.

Due to Our Library Van’s fortnightly roster, the loan period for any item borrowed from OLiV will be extended to 4 weeks.

Free Wi-Fi will be available to connect personal devices, or our community can use a shared iPad.

Can I collect my holds from OLiV?

Yes! You will be able to select Library Van (MPLS) as a pickup location when placing holds on any items within our library catalogue.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any Inter-Library loan requests or magazines for collection from OLiV.

You will receive a text message or email once your items are ready for collection. Your holds will be available for collection from any of our OLiV stops, conveniently co-located at indoor venues like Community Centres or Town Halls across the Peninsula for a period of 14 days.

You can also return any library items to OLiV.

Will customers be allowed onboard OLiV?

No. Due to the smaller vehicle size, and the safety of everyone, our community will be unable to enter OLiV. Our Library items will be wheeled out of the van for easy browsing.

When the weather is inclement, what happens?

Our OLiV sites include community houses, child and family health centres and other community resources.

Our collection can be wheeled off the van for browsing and borrowing inside these spaces.

OLiV has an awning that can be utilised to keep out the weather.

OLiV does not operate on public holidays or during extreme climate events such as days of total fire ban, flooding, or heatwaves to keep both our staff and the community safe.

Why did you retire the old Mobile Library Truck?

Early in 2020, the Mornington Peninsula Mobile Library was removed from service. The large semi-trailer was unsuitable for a modern library service due to several mechanical and environmental problems. In addition, the large semi-trailer no longer aligned with the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s policy of zero carbon emissions by 2040.

A heavy vehicle licence, ample open spaces for parking and turning, and power installed at every mobile library stop were also necessary for the semi-trailer to operate effectively.

To help Mornington Peninsula Libraries provide the best possible library service, a smaller, more sustainable sprinter van was commissioned. Our Library Van (OLiV) will provide greater access to Our Library services and resources in locations across the Peninsula that the old truck couldn’t reach.
